Cory Janssen co-founded Investopedia in an Edmonton student apartment in 1999 and now runs AltaML, the applied AI studio that is Alberta's largest AI employer.
Worth knowing
Cory has taken a company from a dorm-room idea to an exit with Forbes, and he now builds AI products inside other people's industries, spinning out ventures like AlphaLayer and Jurisage and investing through AltaML's own fund. He knows how Alberta capital, public funding and corporate partners actually come together.
Story
Cory started Investopedia with Cory Wagner in 1999 while studying commerce at the University of Alberta, sold it to Forbes Media in 2007 and stayed on as co-president for two more years. He then replicated the model, founding Techopedia and the holding company Janalta Interactive, and moved into private investing. In 2018 he and his wife Nicole founded AltaML, short for Alberta Machine Learning, to put applied machine learning to work for companies in energy, health and government. It now has roughly 120 people across Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. He has kept the money close to home, committing $1.35 million from AltaML to the University of Alberta's Faculty of Science, including a professorship in natural language processing.
