Deval Pandya

Worth knowing

Deval Pandya works on how advanced AI can become more accessible, efficient, sustainable, and meaningfully under human control. His work spans AI infrastructure, open source, safety, climate and energy, public-interest technology, and the translation of research into systems that work in the real world.A question that runs through much of his work is: as AI becomes more capable, who gets to use it, what does it cost, and who remains in control?

Story

Deval’s career has been shaped by a belief that the impact of AI depends on much more on systems than model capability. He began by applying machine learning to real-world challenges in energy, climate, and industrial systems. At the Vector Institute, he later led AI engineering and worked across research, deployment, safety, privacy, and AI adoption — helping bridge the gap between technical advances and practical use. Alongside that work, he has remained deeply engaged with open-source AI, public-interest technology, and the question of how advanced technologies can create broader societal value rather than deepen existing concentration. Today, he is the co-founder of AutoInference, where he is exploring one part of that larger mission: how autonomous and efficient inference infrastructure can reduce the cost, complexity, and expertise required to run advanced AI. Across all of these areas, the through-line is the same: how do we build powerful AI systems that more people and institutions can use, shape, and trust

In Deval's words
