Worth knowing

My academic career has focused on advancing computer vision, machine learning and remote sensing while translating research into real-world applications. I’ve contributed to hundreds of publications and led multidisciplinary research involving university, government and industry partners. My work has supported applications ranging from monitoring Canada’s Arctic environment and wildlife to advancing sports analytics. Alongside research, I’ve contributed through academic leadership and professional service, while having the privilege of training generations of researchers who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.

Story

I’m a professor, researcher, engineer and mentor who enjoys solving difficult problems and working with talented people. Curiosity has always been a strong motivator, whether in research, teaching or leadership. I’m particularly drawn to challenges where technology can make a tangible difference. Beyond academia, I enjoy staying active, especially through hockey and mountain biking, and value time with family. Throughout my career, I’ve tried to remain curious, collaborative and open to new challenges.

In David's words

I’ve always been motivated by a simple question: how can we take an interesting technical idea and make it matter? That question has shaped my academic career. My research has taken me from using satellite imagery to understand the Arctic to developing AI to interpret ice hockey. But the most rewarding part has been the people—working with talented students, researchers and collaborators, and watching them grow into accomplished professionals. After many years in academia, I remain excited by what first attracted me to research: tackling difficult problems, bringing good people together, and seeing where curiosity can take us.
