Matt Golden

Founder & Managing Partner · Golden Ventures

Matt Golden started Golden Ventures in 2011 with a $16-million debut fund and has grown it into one of Canada's largest seed investors, at $280 million across five funds.

Story

Matt began his career as a lawyer at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, working on business technology, financial services and M&A, then left the firm to build. From 2001 to 2008 he co-founded and ran Tira Wireless, a mobile games publisher and content deployment company. He moved to the other side of the table as Director of New Ventures at Brightspark and then Partner at the BlackBerry Partners Fund, a vehicle built entirely around mobile computing. In 2011 he raised his own first fund, and one of its earliest investments was Wattpad, led by his former Tira co-founder Allen Lau. Golden Ventures has since raised a US$100-million fund in 2021 and another $100-million fund in 2024, with general partner Ameet Shah and principal Nick Chen, still concentrated on the Toronto-Waterloo corridor.
